Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Basel (NGiB)
The objective of the Basel Society of Natural Sciences (Naturforschende Gesellschaft in Basel (NGiB), is to promote science and raise awareness for natural studies among the Swiss population.
The NGiB offers free lectures on a variety of topics during the academic semesters. These lectures are public; an important concern of NGiB thus is a general accessibility and comprehensibility of the contributions.
The presentations are intended to provide insights into the diverse functions and task of various natural science organizations in Basel including departments at the university, the Natural History museum, the zoological garden, agricultural research facilities, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute as well as the pediatric clinic. Another focus of these lectures lies on the objectives and methods of industrial research. In addition, the NGiB organizes excursions in the region to complement its range of offers. The “Stiftung Emilia Guggenheim-Schnurr”, a foundation established by NGiB, supports regional research projects in the field of natural sciences.
In “Mitteilungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaften beider Base”l, a joint-venture magazine with the affiliated association from the canton Basel-Landschaft, contributions from the disciplines of natural studies are published regularly. The magazine’s focus lies on scientific articles whose author or content have a direct connection to the wider region around Basel. The magazine is directed at an audience from the region, Switzerland or abroad that consist of professionals as well as people from outside the scientific community of natural sciences. The publication’s aim is to bridge the gap between science and the general population.
