The Uri Society of Natural Sciences (Naturforschende Gesellschaft Uri (NGU)) aims to link research and current developments in natural sciences to the interested general public. The society strives to popularize scientific discoveries and their applications by using a generally comprehensible form. The society takes care of the whole spectrum of the natural sciences with a particular focus on subjects concerning the Canton of Uri and Central Switzerland.
The NGU organises lectures, excursions and visits for its members. Since its foundation in 1911, the NGU publishes reports about topics dealing with the regional nature. For many years the botanical group of the NGU takes care of the flora of Canton of Uri. The group maintains a database of the local plants, UPDATE_s the archiving of the herbarium of lichenologist Anton Gisler and organises courses in plant classification, hikes and weeks dedicated to botany. In 2011, for the occasion of the centenary of the NGU, a richly illustrated book on the geology of the Canton of Uri has been published. Currently, the society sets up a database of the fauna from the Canton.
